Having the correct stock and buffer set up is essential for your AR performing correctly. Not to mention for personal comfort and situational shooting performance, such as for a gun range or for hunting.
Stocks, Buttstocks, Arm Braces, Pistol Fins are some of the terms used for the part(s) that Sturdy, Absorb or Brace for the recoil from firing your AR-15 or AR-10. Most carbon length to rifle length AR's use a Stock or Buttstock, to brace against the shoulder/arm pit area for steady aiming and to absorb the recoil. Stocks come in a variety of styles, Polyurethane to Skeletonized Aluminum, and even bufferless stock adapters, usually marked as either Mil Spec or Comm Spec. Mil Spec stocks can only be used with Mil Spec buffer tubes, and vice-versa. Stocks can come in adjustable and/or foldable (check your States laws) styles or even as a basic Shoulder Plate. Recoil pads for some stocks are also available.
As for the AR pistol length set ups, and depending on your local laws, most can be set up with an Arm Brace or Pistol Fin, and pistol style buffer tube. These differ by resting or bracing against the forearm for firing. Available in Polyurethane or Skeletonized Aluminum, the Pistol Fins fit on pistol style straight buffer tubes. Using a clamp style grip, the lengths can be adjusted with the straight buffer tube.
Before making changes to your buffer system, make sure you have done your research or know what you need. Using the wrong paring of buffer tube lengths and buffer weights/lengths can significantly change how your recoil and ammo ejection system works on your AR-15 or AR-10.
Carbon and rifle length AR set ups with buttstocks usually use a 6 Position Mil Spec or Comm Spec buffer tube, while some require straight tubes. Based on if the Stock use a clamp on or trigger lock style holding system. AR Pistol set ups usually come with a straight buffer tube and brace. There are also 3.5" Short Buffer Tube kits available for Pistol set ups.
Inside the buffer tube, there is usually a buffer or weight. These come in a variety of lengths, weights, and materials, and are very important to the correct function of your firearm. And there are buffer springs, tuned for different AR set ups. The correct buffer with the correct spring, make all the difference in the world. Do some research before modifying any of these items on your AR-15 or AR-10.
